Push-on Mixer.
A hose and spray fitted to the taps on a bath as required. The temperature is controlled by altering the flow of both taps but is not constant. Simple and cheap but is easily dislodged. Holland Park Plumbers fit showers.

Bath/Shower Mixer.
A shower spray combined with a bath mixer tap. The temperature is controlled by the bath taps (plumbed) It provide a shower for little more than the cost of the bath taps. No extra plumbing is needed but the temp control is fiddly to adjust.

Manual Mixer.
A wall unit with the hot and cold water supplies linked to a single valve. Temperature and volume is controlled by one knob, or separately in more expensive examples. It cost more than a bath/shower mixer to install but can be fitted at a convenient height. Hot and cold supply pipes have to be plumbed in.

Thermostatic Mixer.
A wall unit with hot and cold water supplies linked to a single valve. The temperature is controlled by a built in stabiliser so the water cannot run too hot and is not affected by water being drawn from another point in the house. Costa more than a manual mixer.

Power Shower.
The all-in-one shower which incorporates a small but powerful electric pump. This boosts the rate at which the water is delivered from the cold water cistern. Can only be installed with water fed from a cold water cistern and a hot cylinder. A Holland Park Plumber can fit a power shower

Instantaneous Electric Shower.
A wall unit plumbed into a mains cold water supply, which is heated by an electrical element to feed the shower. It allows a shower where a mixer would be illegal, but mains pressure needs to be to at least (10lb/sq in ) (o.7kg/sq cm). The control allows either less water at a higher temperature or more at a lower temp. Must be wired to Current Wiring Regulations.
