Out of the blue your central heating system starts to fail and it is looking like the problem is a blockage of some description as some radiator are hot and some cold and that means all the water will have to be removed to try and find the block. Someone will have to carry out a drain of the system. Is that someone you? Do you have the confidence to do the job? This also isolates the pump.2). Wait for the water to become cool enough to discharge.2). Switch off the main supply to your expansion tank.4). Place a wooden batten across the top of the tank and tie a cord around the middle of it, lowering the cord down, both tying up and suspending the float valve which will cut off the water supply and stop it entering the tank. Using a hose place one end on the outlet of the drain cock and locate the other end into a drain, probably outside. 5). Open the valve on the drain cock, with a correct size spanner. Effect the repair and then, close the drain cock and all the radiator bleed valves. Remove the temporary water stop in the loft. Re-fill the system carefully.7). Once this is done, carry out a bleed on all the radiators from the top one down and then finally bleed the central heating pump. Visually check the system and the job is done. “
